Technology

Here is where my techy geekness comes out. However, I work in technology, it's how I pay the bills, so I'm comfortable with the label. LOL

It started back around 1985 when I purchased my first PC. I worked that summer helping to open a family arts and crafts store. With the help of some of the guys setting up the PC's there, they were able to help me find an inexpesive IBM XT "clone" (as they called them then) I could afford.

I don't remember for certain which version of DOS I started with, but I believe it was MS DOS 2.0. It was an XT clone sporting a 5 1/4" Floppy, 128KB memory, Intel 8088 running at a blazing 4.7MHz. (Note ... that was megahertz, not gigahertz.) Wow I remember when I upgraded to MS DOS 3.2 one of the selling points was that when users went to delete a file, it would prompt you with "Are you sure? (Y/N)"

Okay... enough flashback... Since then I've gone to school with a focus on Information Systems, worked for my family where a primary role was to oversee the POS (Point of Sale) systems, then worked for First Union (now Wachovia), Duke Energy, and Bank Of America in Technology. My work included front end development, mainframe development, and testing, including COBOL, CICS, DB2, IMS, VB, Java, and more. (Since you didn't come here to read a resume I'll stop there.)

At work, I don't get my "hands dirty" like I used to, as my role doesn't allow for that as much now. So when I do get the itch, and I have the time, I'll tinker with something on this site or some kind of technology and/or home electronics.

I know I drive my wife crazy sometimes, but she's so good about it. One recent event was when I installed Ubuntu on a different partition of our home PC and by default had it booting to that. You could still boot to the Windows portion, but she didn't know that yet, and thought everything she had was gone. She didn't directly say anything about it, but I could tell what she was thinking...
