I hate(d) Swimming…

July 2, 2008

I’ve come to love the multiple facets of the traditional triathlon but I always hated the challenge of the swim.  While I felt I could make progress on my bike and run, I have always struggled to barely execute in the swim.

Lap after lap, I just didn’t feel I was getting anywhere.

Talked to my coach at TriSmarter when I first signed up for their training program about my situation, and he quickly suggested a book he thought would help.  I thought… learn to swim from a book?  That’s nuts!  I had previously taken classes one on one with an instructor for two months and I felt like I was getting nowhere.  How could a book help???

However, given that he must have some idea, and I’ve invested so much so far, I embraced the idea and gave it a a shot.  I soon realized I can’t believe it but it’s working!  I am in so much better shape there, swimming faster and longer than I was able achieve before.

If I had to say one thing that helped me most about the book was that it explained so well how the swim should feel, instead of what it should look like.  If you think about it, that’s about the only way one could learn this unless you have a full time coach watching you for every workout.  After all, you can’t really see yourself swim.

The book was Total Immersion and I highly recommend it for anyone struggling with their swim, or even trying to improve their time.
